Visual-Perceptual Skill Evaluations in Manlius and Syracuse, NY
Contact us
The eyes and brain work together to process what we see. This joint effort is part of the human vision system and enables a person to form thoughts, make decisions, and act. When a person does this successfully, it’s referred to as a visual perceptual skill.
A person having difficulties with learning, reading, or math, may undergo a visual perceptual evaluation to determine if their limitations are due to visual dysfunction. As a part of our comprehensive vision services, Savedoff, Ciccone & Davis, Doctors of Optometry, P.C., perform visual perceptual tests at our vision care centers in Manlius and Syracuse, NY. What Is a Visual Perceptual Skill Evaluation?
A visual perceptual evaluation is a series of standardized tests that measure a person’s ability to process visual information. The test may be administered to gauge a patient’s visual limitations. The results of the test can be used to diagnose various vision disorders, and help doctors create vision therapy treatment plans.
Visual perceptual evaluations test how well a person can perform the core visual perceptual skills, such as:
- Visual memory: This skill involves a person’s ability to record, store, and retrieve information that was previously viewed by the eyes, either in the form of images or other visual representations. Visual memory is an important skill because it allows us to later recall what we’ve learned.
- Visual sequential memory: This skill refers to the ability to remember a sequence of visual information, such as letters, numbers, or objects. Visual sequential memory is an important skill for learning reading and spelling.
- Visual form constancy: Understanding that a shape, form, or object stays the same even when its positioning, size, or environment has changed is a visual perceptual skill known as visual form constancy.
- Figure-ground perception: This visual perceptual skill allows people to distinguish between a subject and its background. Having this skill is crucial for concentrating on what’s important, making it a vital part of visual processing.
- Visual-spatial relations: This skill refers to the ability to accurately perceive the position of objects in relation to each other and to oneself. This skill is important as it allows us to understand our surroundings and interact with objects that we see.
- Visual closure: Being able to recognize a complete picture or word when only part of it is visible is known as visual closure. This skill helps people comprehend information quickly and perform appropriate actions.
- Visual discrimination: This skill is the ability to identify and categorize differences and similarities in objects, symbols, and shapes. It involves noticing details such as color, size, position, pattern, texture, and form, making it an important skill for reading and writing.
