When an accident occurs that results in a concussion, brain health and function are the immediate priority. However, other parts of the body can be affected, including vision. To address these concerns, Savedoff, Ciccone & Davis, Doctors of Optometry, P.C. provides comprehensive post-concussion therapy as a part of our comprehensive eye health services. Our doctors also work extensively as consultants to the Upstate University Hospital Concussion Clinic and the Syracuse University Sports Medicine Department. The Need for Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation
The eyes and brain are connected and are in constant communication. When a person suffers a traumatic brain injury such as a concussion, communication can be disrupted. When this happens, the visual system can be significantly impacted, causing multiple visual impairments. The most common vision-related issues following a brain injury include:
- Eye focusing: A person may have difficulties shifting focus between objects of different depths following a concussion or other brain-related injury.
- Eye teaming: Brain injuries can result in the eyes being unable to move together, resulting in double vision.
- Eye movements: Trouble following moving objects can occur when a person has been involved in an accident that affects their brain.
- Motion sensitivity: Patients may not be able to successfully process motion due to a disruption of their visual and balance systems.
The symptoms affecting vision following a concussion are called post-trauma vision syndrome (PTVS). They can include:
- Double vision
- Trouble focusing
- Difficulty reading
- Trouble sustaining computer use
- Poor depth perception
- Sensitivity to light
- Dizziness or nausea
- Headaches, including migraines
- Inability to maintain eye contact
Neuro-optometric vision rehabilitation is a non-invasive treatment that can provide relief from these disabling aftereffects.
