Inside the eye is a natural lens, which refracts (bends) light rays that come into the eye to enhance vision. The lens is flexible, mostly made of proteins (crystallins), and should be clear. However, during the natural aging process, the proteins can break down, causing the lens to become cloudy and affect vision. This is what’s called a cataract.
Cataract surgery is the only method for correcting cataracts and restoring vision. The procedure requires pre- and post-care from doctors working with a surgeon. This approach is known as co-management. Savedoff, Ciccone & Davis, Doctors of Optometry, P.C., offers cataract co-management services and treatment for other ocular diseases to patients at our Manlius and Syracuse, NY, offices.
Cataracts are cloudy spots in your eye’s lens. They are common in the United States, affecting nearly one in five people ages 65 to 74, according to the World Health Organization. Moreover, 50% of people above the age of 80 either have or have dealt with cataracts in their lives.
Cataracts develop because of changes to the tissue that makes up the eye’s lens. This most commonly occurs during aging or because of an injury. Other risk factors of cataracts include:
Patients should make an appointment to be seen by our doctors if they experience any of the following symptoms:
Our team will perform an eye health examination to look for signs of cataracts and assess their severity. We ask patients questions about their eye health, family history, and ability to perform everyday tasks. Doctors may complete additional tests to accurately diagnose cataracts and determine the next course of action.
Cataract treatment will depend on several factors, such as the patient’s symptoms, age, and general health, as well as how far the condition has progressed. When cataracts are in the early stages, Savedoff, Ciccone & Davis, Doctors of Optometry, P.C., can treat the eye disease using non-invasive measures. If the condition has progressed, surgery is recommended.
The doctors at Savedoff, Ciccone & Davis, Doctors of Optometry, P.C., do not perform cataract surgery. However, we do offer pre- and post-operative care. Our team of specialists will monitor the condition after surgery to ensure the eye is healing properly.
During the surgical procedure, the natural lens is removed and replaced with a transparent artificial intraocular lens. Therefore, cataracts cannot come back. However, other complications can arise following the operation.
A condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO), also known as a secondary cataract, can occur in the years following surgery. This condition causes similar symptoms to cataracts, including blurry vision, and typically develops one to five years after surgery. We monitor this and gauge patients’ eye health. If PCO occurs, a simple outpatient procedure lasting a few seconds utilizing a “YAG” laser will permanently eliminate the PCO.
