What Is Corneal Topography?

Corneal topography, also known as computerized corneal topography mapping, is a test performed by eyecare specialists. Corneal topography is designed to provide a “map” of the shape of your cornea, which is the curved, clear covering of the eye. Because the cornea refracts light that enters the eye, any changes or abnormalities in its shape can create vision problems. The test is noninvasive and painless, so patients won’t have anything to worry about. Did you know that the cornea is responsible for almost 2/3 of the light bending power of the entire eye? As a result, problems with the cornea can have an immense effect on reducing optical clarity.

To perform the test, an eyecare specialist will have the patient sit in front of the device, resting their forehead and chin on the designated areas. Once in place, the patient will look into the machine and stare at a target area, during which images of the cornea are captured. These images are then converted into a series of maps. These maps, much like topography maps in geography, are color-coded to display differences in elevation. Nothing touches your eye during the test, it’s a painless procedure and the whole thing is over in a few minutes.

What Is Corneal Topography Used for?

Doctors use this test to help evaluate the surface of the cornea, check for changes in elevation, and measure the thickness. Corneal topography can be used for diagnostic and monitoring purposes, allowing eye doctors to check for conditions such as astigmatism, keratoconus, and pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD). It also lets them monitor the progression of these eye conditions to see if they have worsened. If your doctor suspects your cornea has a growth or an infection, they also may turn to corneal topography to get answers.

Because the test offers an accurate measurement of the cornea, it may also be used for contact lens fittings. While those who need soft contact lenses may be able to use traditional options, patients with irregularities in their eye shape may need specialized options, which corneal topography can assist with. You may also need the test done if you are having eye surgery, such as laser PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) or LASIK surgery, helping ensure you’re a viable candidate. Additionally, if you’ve already had eye surgery, corneal topography may be performed to get a closer look at the results and help ensure everything went as planned.
