If you are considering LASIK vision correction, the first step will be a LASIK consultation. As associates of top LASIK surgery centers, we can guide patients through their journey to attaining 20/20 vision.
What Is Laser/LASIK Eye Surgery?
The cornea is the dome of clear tissue that covers the front of the eye. In eyes with typical vision, this dome refracts (bends) light at a precise angle into the retina. With nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, however, the cornea is shaped incorrectly. This causes light to refract at the wrong angle, resulting in blurred vision.
Excimer laser refractive surgery (laser PRK) is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to reshape the front of the cornea. Now properly shaped, the cornea will refract light correctly for clear, unhindered vision. This procedure provides a permanent solution to vision problems including nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Most patients enjoy 20/20 or close to 20/20 vision after surgery. Although eyeglasses may be required after LASIK surgery, patients will have a lot more freedom to be free of correction, as well as have a major reduction of their eyeglass prescription.
LASIK is an alternative to the standard PRK procedure and is now the more popular option. It is best for patients with stronger prescriptions and offers a fast recovery time after the operation.
What to Expect from Your LASIK Consultation
Savedoff, Ciccone & Davis, Doctors of Optometry, P.C. offer LASIK consultations for patients in Manlius and Syracuse, NY. This is the first step on your LASIK eye surgery journey.
The primary purpose of a LASIK consultation is to determine patient eligibility. Patients over 21 years old who have stable lens prescriptions may be candidates for LASIK. To further determine whether surgery would be appropriate, our eye doctors will conduct a comprehensive eye exam. This is a series of non-invasive diagnostic tests to gather important information for procedure planning, such as:
- The presence of glaucoma, cataracts, or other ocular diseases
- History of previous eye problems or procedures
- The patient’s lifestyle and overall health condition
- The patient’s most current eyeglass prescription
- Precise measurements of the cornea’s shape and thickness
The initial LASIK consultation is also an opportunity for the patient to learn more about their upcoming procedure. The eye doctor will discuss how eye surgery works, along with its risks, benefits, and costs. If the patient has any questions or concerns, they may be addressed at this time.
At the end of the consultation, the eye doctor and patient can decide whether LASIK eye surgery is the right choice. They may then move forward with scheduling treatment at an affiliated center.
