What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?
LASIK is a surgical procedure that corrects vision limitations caused by nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. An ophthalmologist permanently changes the shape of the cornea with precise movements of a specialized laser. This allows light to clearly focus on the retina, correcting refraction problems and eliminating the need for corrective lenses.
The procedure usually only takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye and is generally highly successful, with a high success rate and patient satisfaction. Reports suggest about 90% of patients achieve 20/20 vision or better.
LASIK Evaluations
Even though laser eye surgery provides desirable results almost every time, it’s not recommended for everyone. Patients interested in getting LASIK need to be evaluated to ensure they are a correct fit for the procedure. LASIK aims to compensate for refractive conditions like near and farsightedness as well as astigmatism, however, there may be some residual error following LASIK. Patients over 40 years old will still require glasses to read and perform near work. The result of LASIK is to allow substantial freedom from having to constantly wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, however, it rarely totally eliminates the need for this correction.
